Whether you’re hiking up a trail or exchanging vows at sunrise, what you wear for your elopement should feel like YOU. Confident, fun, and totally iconic. By this point I am sure your understand elopements are not exactly traditional your your outfits don’t have to be either! You can have freedom, movement, layering, and intentional choices whatever that might look like for you. Though I have personal suggestions for weather, styling, and accessories – remember this is your day. It’s okay to have fun and get your dress a little wet and dirty.
As an experienced elopement photographer I like to think of myself as an amateur meteorologist. The mountains are unpredictable but we know what we can be prepared for. Here’s a quick breakdown of Colorado’s seasons + what to expect: snow in spring, golden leaves in fall, chilly mornings, rain, and a chance of hail even in the summer. Just because there’s a chance this might happen doesn’t mean it will happen. It’s always best to be prepared for the worst.
Layering is key and not only for elopements! Think base layers, wraps, jackets, and tights. I can’t stress enough how important it is to wear sturdy footwear. For certain locations you maybe able to get away with more, but be mindful of the weather elements and safety. I suggest moisture-wicking fabrics for comfort and elegance. Keep in mind it is completely up to you, but you could wear your wedding wear all day and just throw layers on and off as needed.
Please wear whatever you want. Wear what feels like you, but for suggestions let’s dive in.
Much of the styling side of things has much to do with the location. For summer I would recommend flowy, lightweight gowns that catch the wind beautifully. Wear that ballgown if you want, but think about your comfort as well. Two-piece sets or jumpsuits for movement and edge are great for hikes! I love the look of long sleeves or capelets for cooler temps as the wind blows.
Tips for hiking in a dress + wearing boots: If you commit to it, commit. If you have a train be ready to carry it and if not make sure you have mobility. Bonus: Detachable trains/skirts for versatility!
My personal preference is Earth-toned suits or relaxed separates, but you can definitely wear a tuxedo. To jazz things up consider suspenders, vests, or rolled-up sleeves for a casual mountain vibe. You can find a nice pair of hiker-friendly boots with tailored trousers to pair with. For colder days considers layers like flannel or a wool overcoat for warmth.
I am so here for the capes, pantsuits, layered skirts, statement accessories. I think the styled shoot below is the perfect example of that. With my experience in the fashion editorial industry I love to play with texture, color, and shape so reach out let’s talk more about it! Be the icon I know you are!
Veils that flow in wind or short ones that stay put are lovely, but don’t feel like you have to get one. You can style things however you’d like. Maybe you try some romantic gloves, hats, faux fur stoles for chillier weather. Blankets, shawls, or ponchos for cozy post-ceremony moments are the cutest and you should forward to that moment around the fire stargazing. If you want to add some special touch think about embroidering a suit coat, boats, or a blanket!
If you’re unsure about something will look just try it out! Try your outfit on with gear (boots, layers, backpacks) all before the big day. Do a “sit, walk, hike, and twirl” test! Most clients travel from out of state so be sure to steam/pack garments carefully. Prep for weather changes with an emergency outfit bag and if not I am sure I can take care of you! Lastly, I think it’s important to coordinate outfits with the scenery: snow, forest, rocks, or meadow. You get the point! So what are you waiting for? Facetime me if you have questions!
